When we are talking about long-term appointments to the judiciary, it is critical that we get it right and my experience with the judicial nominating process makes me uniquely qualified to serve as Governor’s Councilor.

I am one of the two dozen attorneys from across the state who currently serve on the Joint Bar Committee and independently review, evaluate and report to the Governor on the qualifications of individuals under consideration for judicial nomination.

As President of the Hampden County Bar Association ("HCBA"), I made the judicial nominating process more user friendly for Western Massachusetts.  I organized public testimony hearings for judicial nominees in Hampden County so that lawyers and other members of the public in the western part of the state had a real opportunity to speak directly to the Governor’s Council on judicial nominations.

I organized and moderated a seminar sponsored by the HCBA for potential judicial applicants with a panel that included Governor Baker’s Chief Legal Counsel, the Judicial Nomination Commissions’ Executive Director and Deputy Legal Counsel, members of the Judicial Nominating Commission, and Governor’s Councillors.

I worked closely with the leaders of the Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin, and Berkshire County Bar Associations and other members of the bar to identify lawyers in the community that would make great judicial candidates and encouraged them to apply.

Western Massachusetts deserves to be treated equally to the other parts of the Commonwealth when it comes to the nomination of judges.  As your Governor’s Councillor, I intend to accelerate these proactive efforts so that the most qualified lawyers from our community will be appointed to the judiciary and serve our community.
